The Winter Ritual You Didn't Know You Needed
There comes a point every year when even the most devoted summer enthusiasts start craving a slower pace. After months of chasing sunsets and saying yes to every outdoor invitation, winter arrives with its own quiet appeal – gently insisting that we pause. Rest. Take better care of ourselves. Winter, I think, is when you need it most.
It was in that spirit that I found myself at the One&Only Spa on a grey Cape Town morning, looking for the kind of experience I’d been promising my readers – and, if I’m honest, myself – for a while. Warm. Restorative. Genuinely wintry, in the best possible sense. What I found exceeded every expectation I had. As someone who has made it something of a personal mission to experience the finest spa offerings this city and its surrounds have to offer, I do not say that lightly.
The Whispers of Winter Solair package pairs breakfast at ROOI with a 90-minute spa treatment, and ROOI alone could justify the morning. The setting is quietly extraordinary – without feeling contrived - and distinctly South African. And then the breakfast itself – and I say this as someone who has eaten at some of the finest tables this country has to offer – was, without question, one of the most extraordinary I have ever experienced.
From the restaurant, you leave the main hotel and cross a small bridge over the waterway to reach the spa on its own private island. It’s a subtle – but effective transition – as though you’re stepping into something more intentional. The space was reimagined last year around the Southern Cross constellation, and the inspiration runs far deeper than aesthetics.
From the moment you arrive, the One&Only Spa wraps you in the kind of effortless luxury that is genuinely rare – immaculate without feeling clinical, indulgent without feeling excessive. The sauna and jacuzzi are among the most beautiful I've encountered anywhere, and the staff possess that particular gift of making you feel, within moments, as though the whole morning was arranged with only you in mind.
My 90-minute treatment was with Sylvia, who has been at the spa for several years and whose skill is of the quietly extraordinary variety. She sat with me beforehand, asked all the right questions, and suggested incorporating hot stone therapy to ease the tension I was carrying – predominantly in my neck and back after an incredibly demanding year – before working intuitively through neck, back, legs and feet and finishing with a head massage using oils I had chosen myself. Her technique was deeply knowledgeable and entirely instinctive – a continuous, almost fluid rhythm shifting between deep pressure and lighter, flowing work that felt completely alive to the body beneath her hands. I have had a great many massages in my life. I have never had one like this. My husband's treatment was with Asavela, who he said was equally exceptional – which tells you everything you need to know about the standard of therapists here.
Afterwards, the relaxation room: ergonomic loungers, electrolyte water and a quiet so complete it feels earned. A thoughtful continuation of the experience rather than an afterthought. I didn’t want to leave – and when I finally did, I felt a lightness that stayed with me long after I’d gone.
It’s easy to forget, as locals, that the One&Only is not just a fancy hotel. Experiences like this turn it into something closer to a sanctuary – one that happens to sit right in the middle of the city, waiting. If the full Whispers of Winter package feels like a stretch, the spa’s signature treatments stand entirely on their own. But if you can – and I hope you can – this one is worth every cent. Go. On the coldest, greyest morning you can find.
