Amanda-Jayne: Winter Edit Essentials
It is, perhaps, one of the more curious aspects of human nature – how instinctively kindness flows toward others, and how rarely it finds its way home. A candle as an expression of gratitude. A hand cream nestled into a birthday hamper. Bath salts thoughtfully selected for a friend who's had a difficult week. And yet when it comes to ourselves, that same impulse quietly surrenders – replaced by the familiar, unfounded notion that our own restoration can wait.
I'm notorious for this. Well, used to be. And it took unboxing three of Amanda-Jayne's winter essentials to finally change my mind.
Even knowing all of this, my first instinct was deeply predictable: save it, protect it, wait for a worthy occasion. We’re remarkably good at that – holding the good things so carefully, so reverently, that we forget to actually enjoy them. Brought out for guests. Rarely coveted ourselves.
The Eden Bath Salt announced itself the moment I lifted it out. The bottle alone – heavy, apothecary glass, the kind of thing you keep on the shelf long after it's empty, simply because it's too beautiful to throw away. I added about a tablespoon and what followed was, without exaggeration, a five-star spa experience in my own bathroom. The lavender, geranium, peppermint and rosemary blend is therapeutic in every sense of the word – not just the label. There's a reason Dead Sea salt and Pink Himalayan salt have stood the test of time. The muscle relief, the detoxifying warmth, the way your skin feels when you finally step out – it's the kind of product that converts you on the first use and keeps you converted.
Then came the candle, and again I overruled my instincts – giving myself permission to light it and not look back. It burns every evening now, without guilt. And when it runs out
– because it will – I'll replace it without a second thought. No waiting for an occasion worthy enough. Every evening qualifies. Especially the ordinary ones.
The body oil was worth every drop. There's something about a Cape Town winter that quietly takes its toll – on your mood, your energy and most visibly, your skin. This delivered exactly the kind of nourishment my forty-something skin has been asking for, with increasing insistence, for some time now. Deeply nourishing without heaviness, it's the kind of product that earns a permanent place on your bathroom shelf – not because you remember to use it, but because you genuinely look forward to it.
What Amanda-Jayne does beautifully – and I mean this – is remind you that restoration isn't indulgence. It's self-care. And winter, with its early darkness and its quiet invitation to slow down, is the perfect season to finally stop waiting for someone else to give you the things you actually need.
Treat yourself to all three – they work as a set in the most considered way, and the cumulative effect is genuinely something. But if you can only stretch to one, start with the Eden Bath Salt. It will change your evenings. And then you'll come back for the rest.
