Pumba Private Game Reserve – Beyond Expectations

Our Eastern Cape winter escape ended at Pumba, and it delivered – without question – the most incredible bush experience I have ever had (and I've visited a great many game reserves across this country).

From the moment we arrived, the experience felt faultless. Pumba has two luxury lodges – Bush Lodge and Water Lodge – and we stayed at the former, a collection of secluded, standalone thatch-roofed chalets that seem to dissolve into the surrounding bush, blending wildness with luxury in equal measure.

At the heart of the main lodge sits a beautifully designed central boma, where guests gather around the fire after evening game drives. Encircling it is a series of cosy lounges warmed by fireplaces, book-stacked corners, the main restaurant, and sweeping decks looking out over a swimming pool, a tranquil watering hole, and the bush beyond.

Separated by a shared interleading entrance, its family chalets branch off into generously proportioned, thoughtfully finished suites for both adults and children – each with its own freestanding bath and outdoor shower open to the bush air, and a lounge that was made for lingering. On arrival, a warmly-written welcome note was waiting alongside a decanter of port, glasses and a selection of classic South African treats – a generous gesture that set the tone for everything that followed.

It was a promise the rest of the stay kept: thoughtful touches – hot water bottles, branded ponchos, bottled water on every drive – unlike anything I'd seen at other lodges, and small enough to matter more than they should.

Morning drives pause for freshly brewed coffee, rusks and miniature muffins, taken in with the surrounding beauty. Afternoon drives wind down into traditional sundowners; anything from hot chocolate to a proper gin and tonic – and I loved that they ask ahead of time what you’d like packed.

Our wildlife viewings were extraordinary, thanks to a guide who went out of his way to find us the best possible sightings. There was real excitement in watching him work – quick to move – but always with the calm confidence and safety of someone who knew exactly what he was doing.

Among our most unforgettable sightings were Pumba's famous white lions – an enormous male moving through the bush with another male and a lioness, brushing casually against our vehicle as he passed. We also spent an unhurried stretch with a breeding herd of elephants – calves, mothers, weathered matriarchs, an impressive bull – and, among them, a hilariously mischievous adolescent that stole the show. Giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthog and a scattering of antelope rounded out days that never once felt short of wonder.

The staff anticipated every need before we even had to ask – from refreshments after a drive to warm fires lit in our chalet before we returned each evening, beautifully turned-down beds or thoughtful treats waiting in our room, every detail was handled with genuine care. We were made to feel welcomed and special from beginning to end.

The dining deserves a mention of its own – this was not the limited, one-menu affair you brace yourself for at a remote lodge. Every sitting brought a genuinely extensive spread: gourmet burgers, fresh wraps, vibrant salads, and any number of other beautifully prepared dishes, all cooked to a very high standard. Every meal felt fresh, generous and, frankly, a little unexpected out here in the bush.

It was impossible to go hungry – or thirsty. The level of service throughout our stay was simply exceptional, striking the perfect balance between polished luxury and warm, authentic hospitality.

It wasn’t simply the highlight of our road trip. It was one of the finest travel experiences I’ve had anywhere in Africa.
