The Art of Going Nowhere

Tucked into a valley in the Breede River Winelands, McGregor is so beautifully unhurried that it almost seems unbothered by the idea of being discovered.

Whitewashed cottages. Oak-lined streets. A main road you can walk end to end in under ten minutes. A wine bar where the owner knows everyone's order. That kind of town.

And Lucky Crane Villas is where you want to stay.

The villas – twelve of them, each named after a local bird species – were conceived by an Italian who left an advertising agency in Milan, fell in love with Africa, and decided that what McGregor needed was somewhere beautiful to sleep. And she did it with exactly the kind of effortless taste that Italians are, frankly, unfairly good at.

Each villa has been meticulously designed with the kind of considered detail that takes real conviction: polished concrete floors, rain showers, fully equipped kitchens, private pools that face the mountains, and outdoor baths that make you want to cancel everything and stay another night.

Right now, in these in-between winter weeks, silver leaves catch the low winter sun outside the village villas, mornings cold enough to see your breath, the Riviersonderend Mountains turning blue by 4pm – the kind of light that makes you want to do absolutely nothing, which is, exactly what the place is designed for.

Self-catering here is not a compromise – it's the point. You stock up at the market, you braai in the garden, you eat breakfast in your dressing gown while a Fiscal Flycatcher lands on the pool fence. Nobody requires anything of you. No check-out energy, no communal dining schedule, no performance of being a guest. Just firewood, and time.

When you do venture out – and you will – Lord's Wines is twenty minutes away, the Boesmanskloof Trail is there for those who feel inclined, and McGregor's main street has enough good food and local art to fill an afternoon pleasantly, and entirely without rushing. Jimmy's Pub is a short walk for a Tuesday-night burger. The Robertson Wine Route is on your doorstep.

Until 12 June, they're running a midweek deal worth knowing about: book three nights, pay for two on a Monday or Tuesday arrival. Extra firewood included, and one in-villa head and shoulder massage. For winter rates in a place like this, it's genuinely hard to justify not going.
