Inside My Obsession with South African Skandi
I know maximalism and colour are having their moment right now – and I genuinely love it for the people who love lots of colour. But my life is full and fast and constantly moving, and my home has always been my place to exhale. Which is why I will always find my way back to neutrals, to calm, to spaces that simply let you breathe.
There are shops you walk through – and then there are spaces that shift something in you the moment you step inside. The Gatehouse by Mavromac is firmly the latter. Clean lines, natural textures, imperfect ceramics, beautiful wood, soft linen – everything considered, everything calm, and yet never once cold. It has that particular warmth that only truly good interiors possess – the kind that makes you want to slow down, look properly, and stay a little longer than you planned.
And then there is the world they carry within it. Mavromac and The Gatehouse has always believed quietly and deeply in the power of beauty – working with skilled South African artisans and craftspeople to create pieces that are locally made and genuinely worth owning. But what really stopped me was learning about Bernie de Le Cuona – a name spoken about with real reverence in the design world, and for good reason. She didn't just fall in love with linen, she redefined it entirely. Her fabrics are soft, deeply tactile, inspired by sun-bleached landscapes and an honest commitment to sustainability. The kind of textile that makes you understand immediately why some things are worth doing properly.
European design sensibility, real African soul, and women building legacies one exquisitely crafted fabric at a time. That is the kind of brand I want in my home.
